 | Sharapova's feeling pretty good Paul Malone September 11, 2006 12:00am MARIA Sharapova reacted to her US Open final win against Justine Henin-Hardenne yesterday with an unforgettable smile of triumph and then a cynical sneer. The cameras flashed as Sharapova sparkled like the diamantes in her black tennis dress and giggled like the excitable teenager she rarely allows herself to be after her 6-4 6-4 victory. But journalists drew steely stares and sharp retorts later when she was asked about vision of her last two matches showing her coach and father, Yuri Sharapov, and hitting partner Michael Joyce, making finger gestures interpreted as illegal coaching. The sensitivity of Sharapova, 19, to questions about the pair's guidance appeared to diminish her enjoyment of the victory. Joyce was seen holding up four fingers to Sharapova during a change of ends. Sharapov's actions in holding up a banana and a water cup to her in her semi-final win against top seed Amelie Mauresmo were widely derided as an example of his controlling personality. An angry Sharapova would not say what Joyce's gesture meant after she had opened her media conference by saying: "Can we have a positive session today, please?" "Just take the rules away, just think. If someone tells me to eat a banana, do you think that's the reason I won the match?" Sharapova said after her second grand slam win following her 2004 Wimbledon title. "I don't feel like I need to confirm anything. "The last thing I'm going to talk about is some fingers and a banana. Got that? "I believe at the end of the day, my life is not about a banana, what I wear or the friends I have. "I'm sitting here as the US Open champion, a two-time grand slam champion." Sharapova had said, "Thank you, Daddy, I love you Daddy" at the presentation of the silver trophy, which lost its lid as she jumped up and down in joy. The innocence and guile that are part of Sharapova's intriguing personality have rarely been better combined on the same day. "I thought to myself, 'That's typical Maria'. There's always something," she said. In reference to an advertising campaign by her clothing sponsor set to the Broadway tune I Feel Pretty, Sharapova said: "I feel pretty darn good. "The hidden message in that whole commercial is (for) girls who grow up and might be bullied. It's their hard work and fearlessness which goes into their career." Sharapova, who had worked in menial jobs to fund their move from Siberia to Florida to hone her game at a tennis academy, blessed himself and kissed his daughter many times when she raced into the stands to share the moment after the 90-minute final. "You can't buy a grand slam title, no matter how many millions you have. This beats any sort of money," Sharapova said. Sharapova's big forehand and well-placed serving made Henin-Hardenne, a four-time grand slam finalist this year but winner of only the French Open, appear an outdated model for the first time in a career highlighted by five major titles. "She's been a real fighter and I have no excuses. The better player won," said Henin-Hardenne, who denied her effort in the final had been hampered by a back injury that had caused her pain in her previous two matches. Sharapova will move up a place in the rankings to No. 3   | ||
