Roger Federer will try and make another mark in tennis history with a third straight US Open title when he faces Andy Roddick in Sunday's final.
The Swiss can become the first man ever to win three successive Wimbledon and US Open titles in the same years.

Federer has won 10 of his 11 matches against American Roddick, including their last six encounters and two Grand Slam finals at Wimbledon.

The final at Flushing Meadows is scheduled to start at 2100 BST.

Federer has already won Wimbledon and the Australian Open in 2006, and lost to Rafael Nadal in the French Open final.

"It's awesome," Federer said of his own achievements.

"It was what I was hoping for at the beginning of the year, but it's such a long road and you have to work so extremely hard.

"I got so close to winning the French as well so I'm happy I didn't let my head hang down, but came right back, won Wimbledon and now I'm back in the final of the US Open.

"It's a fantastic year - the best ever for me."

Federer is well aware that most of the 23,000 spectators in Arthur Ashe Stadium will be hoping for an American victory, but the Swiss is not concerned.

"I think it's obviously more difficult here because of the crowd and the whole finals situations, playing an American," said Federer.

"I think it's more enjoyable if the crowd really gets into it. Here, it's automatic that you'll have the crowd support for the Americans.

"I've seen it how it was with (James) Blake and with (Andre) Agassi over the years. I don't think there will be any difference in the final."

Roddick is in bullish mood after rediscovering his form under the guidance of new coach Jimmy Connors.

"I am definitely a lot more confident in the last few weeks," he said. "The sense of belief he has brought me from the beginning has been a nice change.

"His excitement and his passion for the game - it's nice. Mentally I am in a good place right now."

And despite his woeful record against the world number one, Roddick remains convinced he can defeat Federer.

"I am going to go out and throw it all at him," he said.

"I am just going to go for it. I am not going to lay down. I am going out there to win the US Open."
